Oak Grove Primary

Where Warrior traditions begin!

Welcome!  Thank you for taking the time to visit this site and learn more about our school.  I hope this information will be helpful.

Oak Grove Primary School is a K-1 school located in Lamar County just west of Hattiesburg, MS.  With over 800 students in our school it is a big and busy place to be!

The Mississippi Department of Education ranks schools based on the results of MAAP which begins in the 3rd grade.  Although we do not administer this test we feel strongly that the foundation we build is a crucial beginning for future success.  We are proud of the academic success of our students and know they will continue to grow and excel.

We  continue to implement healthy choices through our "Health Is Academic" focus as well as our school district's wellness policy. Please take time to read the policy and help us adhere to these changes - they are designed to help us all grow healthier!

Our school is also part of the Whole Schools Art Initiative.  We are recognized as a Model Whole School, an honor earned through the dedication of many people who see how beneficial learning through the arts is for our students. We have a Visual Arts Studio and a Performing Arts Studio.  Our students are instructed by certified art and music teachers each week.   Classroom teachers integrate the arts throughout our curriculum to create fun and enticing learning opportunities for our students.  We are very grateful to the Mississippi Arts Commission for their support of arts infusion in Mississippi classrooms!

Remember that school begins each day at 7:40 AM and there will be lots of traffic if you don't ride a bus so come early!  We have teachers on duty beginning at 7:00.  Our school day ends at 2:10 PM.

We follow PBIS in our school district.  This is a positive behavior initiative that encourages our children to make positive choices in every situation wherever they are! We have adopted procedures that every child follows in every area of campus.  Our school-wide motto is shared each morning as we say the pledge.  It is:

We are responsible, We are respectful, We are ready to learn, We are Warriors!

If you would like to contact us for more information about our school please use the contact above or call us at  (601) 264-9764 .

The mission of the Lamar County School District is to provide a quality education in a safe and healthy learning environment with opportunities for all students to experience success.

Our vision is that our students will be thriving, productive leaders who make a positive difference in their lives and the lives of others.

Assistant Principal

What a privilege it is for me to get to take a moment to introduce myself.  My name is Annabeth Bates, and I am honored to be Oak Grove Primary's Assistant Principal.  I am married to the most wonderful man in the world (alongside my dad!).  We have been married for 22 years and have two incredible young men. My oldest son, Tyler, graduated in 2017 from Oak Grove High School, and my youngest son, Coben, is an eleventh grader there this year.  Although I am somewhat of a transplant, my family and I have put down roots here in Oak Grove.  We are partners at Venture church and love it and our community!

I moved from Kansas to Mississippi when I was in the fifth grade.  My family and I moved to Collins, Ms where I graduated from Collins High School in 1988.  Next, I attended JCJC and then transferred to USM.  I graduated as a "Golden Eagle" in 1992.

In my career, I have taught from three year old preschool through first grade.  The "babies", as we in the South call them,  are my heart.  In 1993 I was selected as Mississippi's Sallie Mae First Year Teacher of the Year recipient.  In 1994, I was selected as Collins Elementary's Teacher of the Year.  After teaching in Collins for 8 years, I was blessed to be able to go home to be "mommy" to my two sons. I stayed home with them until my youngest started preschool.  At that time, I was lucky enough to be able to teach preschool at Temple Baptist Church where my baby was enrolled.  In 2007, I accepted an Achieve Tutoring position at OGP.  In January. of 2009, I was blessed to be able to take over a KG. class at OGP.  In 2010, I was selected at Oak Grove Primary's Teacher of Year.  In 2013, I embarked on a new adventure as Oak Grove Primary's Intervention Specialist.  In this position, I had the opportunity to work collaboratively with teachers and tutors to find strategies to help children become successful.

After completing my Masters in Educational Leadership from William Carey University in May of 2016, I stepped into the Assistant Principal position.  I am thrilled to be in this position working with the best of the best at Oak Grove Primary!

My philosophy of teaching is that everyone should work together as a team to do WHATEVER is necessary and possible to reach each child, individually.  I believe in multi-sensory approaches to teaching.  I think the whole child should be addressed.  I believe in 1 Corinthians words which inform us that each one of us is born with a very special gift and talent.  My passion, by and large, is to help establish the most productive environment and to create as many meaningful opportunities to empower children and engage them in their own learning process.  I, along with my colleagues at OGP, subscribe to the philosophy of being a life-long learner.  It is all of our goal and desire to provide your children with experiences that will grow them into responsible, respectful, ready to learn "WARRIORS"!

Multisensory Masters!
Heros in training

Work Examples

  • In HEROES, students are given multi-sensory reading reinforcement using the Orton-Gillingham method.

In ACHIEVE, students' needs with individual skills are met in a one-to-one or one-to-two setting.

In Travelers, students are given math enrichment to take them to the next level.

All three of these pull out programs are funded through Title I and are administered by trained tutors who meet LCSD's employee requirements.  They are under the supervsion of Annabeth Bates, Intervention Specialist.
